Ampheristus toliapicus was a fish which had a mobile marine lifestyle and was carnivorous. It lived between 56.0 - 47.8 Ma and can be found at numerous London Clay sites. These sites include Sheppey (Kent) and Aveley (Essex), although the Aveley No. 2 Pit is now unavailable for any kind of fossil hunting activities as it has been infilled.
It can be recognized by having the eye sockets far forward in the skull, unlike other species of fish found in the London Clay it does not have sclerotic ossicles*. It also has two ridges on the top of the skull in the centre.
*Scleral ossicles are dermal bones that are present in the eye of many vertebrates
