Maylandsea is a London Clay site in Essex. It is a great site to find lobster fossils and has a very large foreshore.
The total exposed area of London Clay is around 700 metres long. To access the site there is a long footpath which can be difficult to traverse.
As in other London Clay sites the fossils found here are also preserved in phosphatic nodules across the foreshore and the beach. There is no in-situ collecting at this site as only fossil are from the small cliffs on the beach which are bout 1-2 metres tall.
The site can be very muddy and covered in soft clay which is difficult to traverse so good footware such as boots are recommended.
Maylandsea is best visited about 2 hours before low tide for the longest fossil hunting time period.

Very rarely fossil fish can be found at Maylandsea such as the one above. This one was found by Thomas Wells.
